School inspections: from control and regulation to support and counselling ?

Since the 1980s, school inspections have changed significantly in most countries across the world, after having remained largely unchanged since the eighteenth century. In the past, the main role of inspectors was to monitor teachers by ensuring that schools follow ministerial guidelines and the national curriculum. Today, inspectors are also required to provide support and guidance to teachers and to act as a link between schools and the authorities.
