Considering the double postulate that the imagination as a world of images, as a non realistic world, preexists to writing and that instructions are texts whose aim is to appeal to writing within the framework of fiction writing, this paper aims to report a research on the role played by the interpretation of instructions by 6e pupils when they devise their texts of fiction. A piece of instructions is composed of two elements, first an inducing text appealing to the imagination and an injunctive text of the metalinguistic type describing the task to achieve; we had the first one vary in order to check the interpretative process. The results of the research are contrasted and reflect a fictional universe which owes as much to school work as to personal experience. The strategies used by the pupils to fulfil the instructions which try, by means of constraint, to incite them to the most personal expression possible, show that the construction of fiction depends on how much the young writer puts into his text and on his awareness of the creative activity which takes place for a reader to come.
These first observations lead the way to a reflection on what fiction in texts written by pupil writers is made of (of mental representations of course but also of a subjectivity implicitly or explicitly implemented by means of knowledge) and on the role played by the teacher who has imposed these instructions and will impose more during the writing process, thus changing the first go written by his pupils. Then we come to question the relevance of the aid given by teachers.
