L’article appréhende, au travers des représentations sociales et professionnelles, la construction identitaire chez les enseignants d’EPS, dans sa dimension complexe et dynamique. L’identité professionnelle s’inscrit dans un processus au sein duquel le sujet met en oeuvre des stratégies d’adaptation vis-à-vis de l’évolution de la profession. S’appuyant tantôt sur une appartenance au groupe, tantôt sur des formes de différenciation, tantôt sur la singularité de son contexte professionnel, l’enseignant élabore une identité plurielle et composite, faite d’ajustements multiples, de bricolages, pour construire un monde cohérent et lui donner sens au quotidien. Les résultats nous conduisent à envisager l’identité à différentes échelles. À l’échelle du collectif, des sous-groupes professionnels puis de l’individu dans la singularité de son processus identitaire lié à son histoire et à la diversité des contextes qu’il traverse.


This paper provides a basis of analysis for the process of building a professional identity among physical education teachers, through a study of social and professional attitudes and perceptions and the complexity and changing nature of this identity. Professional identity evolves in a process in which the individual teacher applies strategies allowing him to adapt to the evolution of the job by elaborating a multifaceted composite identity which he or she constantly adjusts. To do this, he or she can rely on the professional group to which he belongs, on his own attitudes and perceptions, or on the uniqueness of his professional context. Doing so, he or she builds a coherent environment and gives meaning to his day to day responsibilities. The results of this research allow a clearer understanding of identity on three levels: a collective level, a professional subgroups level and an individual level, involving the uniqueness of the identity building process linked to the individual’s professional past and the many different contexts he has found himself in.
