La conférence générale est l'organe suprême de décision de l’Association. Elle se réunit tous les quatre ans et c’est à cette occasion que les membres de plein droit élisent le Président de l’AIU et son Conseil d’Administration.

La prochaine Conférence générale de l'AIU se tiendra à Bangkok, en Thaïlande, du 14 au 17 novembre 2016. Organisée en partenariat avec un consortium d'Universités thaïlandaises dirigé par l'Université Siam, cette 15e Conférence générale portera sur: L’enseignement supérieur: un moteur pour des sociétés innovantes et durables.

The 15th IAU General Conference will focus on sharing strategies and practices that demonstrate how higher education institutions contribute to innovation and sustainability. Equally importantly, the Conference will determine what more HEIs can do, especially through IAU, to become true catalysts for change.
HEIs acting as catalysts for innovative and sustainable societies will be examined from the perspectives of HEI functions which must all contribute to the overall role and societal impact of the institution, keeping in mind the unavoidable context of internationalization and the necessity to connect with societal partners and stakeholders:
- Leadership
- Research
- Curriculum

The programme will offer opportunities to hear speakers and interact with experts and peers from all parts of the world; furthermore, IAU will aim to take advantage of being in Bangkok, Thailand, to underline especially the ASEAN university approaches to these challenges.
